The Hearts of the Children

Helaman Campbell

Helaman was born on February 13, 1860 in North Ogden, Utah. His father was acquainted with the prophet Joseph Smith, worked on the Nauvoo temple, and was a member of the Mormon Battalion. His mother was born in Ontario, Canada. Helaman was the seventh child born in the family. He had one younger brother who died as a young child.

When he was twenty years old he went to visit his older brother Jonathan and his wife Sarah, who had just had a new baby. While he was visiting he met Mary Blanche Raleigh, who had come to help her sister Sarah with the new child. Mary Blanche was three years older than Helaman and had two young children. She was divorced from her first husband. Helaman married Mary Blanche on May 2nd, 1880 and they had nine children together.

This information came from family genealogical records in my possession, a life sketch of Mary Blanche Raleigh written by her daughter Eva Campbell Bybee, and a life sketch of Jonathan Campbell (the brother of Helaman) written by Andrew Jensen, 1901.
